His latest film Lithuanian director Mantas Kventaraviciuswho was killed in early April in Mariupol, where he was shooting in the middle of the war, will be screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
“Mariupol 2”, a film lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes, “shows the life that goes on while bombs fall and reveals tragic and at the same time hopeful images”, is mentioned in the official list of films of the festival.
The 75th Cannes Film Festival starts next Tuesday. “Mariupoli 2” will be screened on May 19 and 20.
The whole program of the Festival will have as its background the war in Ukraine since, inevitably, “it is in everyone’s mind”, as its director, Thierry Fremo, said. Two generations of Ukrainian directors will be present, with the “old” Sergei Loznitsa competing in the film “The Natural History of Disaster” for the destruction of German cities by Allies during World War II and the “new” Maxim Nakonesnil who will participate in the section “A certain look”.
Mantas Kvendaravitsius, the anthropologist and creator of the films “Barzah” (2011), “Mariupol” (2016) and “Parthenon” (2019), was killed while trying to leave the besieged Mariupol in April.
«In 2022 he returned to Ukraine, in Donbass, in the heart of the war, to rediscover the people he had met and videotaped between 2014-15. “After his death, his producers and collaborators worked to continue showing his work, his vision, his films,” the Cannes Film Festival said in a statement. His fiancée, Hannah Bilobrova, who accompanied him on the trip, managed to take the shots that had been shot there and edit them together with Kvendaravicius’s colleague, the moderator Dunia Sitsov. The latter stated that she was “very excited” about the screening of the film. “Fortune teller, thank you”he wrote on Twitter.
In the previous film, “Mariupol” shot in 2016, the director presented the story of a besieged city. The film was screened for the first time at the Berlin International Film Festival.
