Sony plans to expand production of the PlayStation 5 console as supplier problems ease and has signaled a radical expansion of its video game portfolio, including more titles for PCs and mobile devices.
The PS5, which went on sale in November 2020, has so far sold less than its predecessor in the second year since launch because of problems in supplying components for production. But Sony is expected to close that gap in year three, with the PS5 predicted to outpace the PS4’s installed base the following year.
“We are planning further large increases in console production, which will take us to levels of production we have never achieved,” Sony InteractiveEntertainment Chief Executive Jim Ryan told investors.
He said that despite the severe social isolation measures put in place in China, “things for the supply chain are definitely improving”.
Sony forecast PS5 sales of 18 million units in the fiscal year ending March, up from 11.5 million a year earlier.
Underscoring a shift in strategy to expand the company’s reach beyond a single exclusive gaming platform, Ryan said more PC and mobile games will be released.
While PS4 and PS5 games account for more than two-thirds of the company’s launches this year, PC and mobile games will account for nearly half of launches in 2025.
“The drive to broaden our audience will have a fundamental effect on our portfolio,” said Ryan.
With the change in strategy, Sony expects its games division to keep pace with changes in the industry that have seen growth in cloud computing technology, continued increases in smartphone processing power and expansion in consumer spending on free online games. .
