The next “big step for humanity” is to be taken by NASA by sending the spacecraft “CAPSTONE” into orbit around the Moon, later this month, as part of the preparation of a new lunar space station.
The boat, which is about the size of a microwave oven and weighs just 55 kilograms, will be launched from the Mahia Peninsula of New Zealand sometime between 13 and 22 June.
It will test the stability of a halo-shaped orbit around the moon before being used by Lunar Gateway, NASA’s programmed lunar outpost.
It is noted that the Lunar Gateway will one day serve as a “base area” for humans to land on the moon and possibly as a jump point for missions to Mars.
