US lawmakers are asking Google not to show “fake” abortion clinics or crisis pregnancy centers for abortion-related searches.

Last week, US senators sent a letter to the CEO of Google-owned Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, calling for an abortion rather than occasionally sending him to a “crisis pregnancy center” that prevents women from getting pregnant. undergo surgery. I urged search engines to give accurate results.

“Google should not show fake abortion clinics or crisis pregnancy centers,” the lawmakers wrote. “If Google continues to return results with this error, the results should at least be properly tagged,” they wrote.

The reason for this letter was, as Reuters reported, a survey released by the Center to Counter Digital Hate, a nonprofit organization, last week.

According to the survey, in some states, 11% of search results for “abortion clinics” or “abortion pills” were anti-abortion centers.

The research team also found that in the states surveyed, 28% of Google ads were for abortion facilities and 37% of Google Maps results were results. The letter states that some centers have denied responsibility, but not all.

The Crisis Pregnancy Center or Pregnancy Resource Center is a non-profit organization that persuades pregnant women not to have abortions. Some centers have accused women of providing inaccurate information about their pregnancies, which could jeopardize access to abortion.

In May, US parliamentarians called on Google to “stop excessively collecting user location data” that could be used to identify the person who had the abortion.

Last week’s survey found that tech giant Facebook is at risk as it collects sensitive data about people who visit these Crisis Pregnancy Center websites.
