Instagram is testing new options for users to verify their age on the platform and using video selfies to force people to guarantee them.
The Meta-owned photo-sharing services say they are testing two new ways to verify age, as well as allowing IDs to be uploaded online.
“Knowing if someone is a teen (ages 13-17) provides age-appropriate experiences such as breaching personal accounts, avoiding unnecessary contact with unknown adults, and restricting contact from advertisers. Erika Finkel, Director of Data Management at Meta said in a blog post:
If you’re trying to change your birth date on Instagram to between 18, use one of three options: upload your ID, take a video selfie, or ask others’ friends. Ask to confirm. Check your age. Try this out to make sure adults and teens get the right experience in their age group.
In 2019, Instagram began asking people to provide their age when signing up for the service. This app requires you to be at least 13 years old to register. In some countries, the minimum age is higher.
Instagram has partnered with Yoti, a company that specializes in online age verification to ensure user privacy.
Users can now choose to upload video selfies to verify their age. Yoti’s technology assesses age based on facial features and shares this assessment with the tech giants. Meta and Ioti erase the image. The technology does not recognize you, it only recognizes your age.
Another option for age verification is a social bonus that allows you to ask your peers to verify their age. The recipient of the bonus must be at least 18 years old and must not be guaranteed to anyone at the time and must comply with other guarantees.
You can choose between three people who vouch for you. And you should receive a request to confirm your age and respond within 3 days.
The new age verification feature will roll out to consumers in the United States.
Users can upload forms of identification such as driver’s licenses and ID cards to prove their age. According to Meta, the ID is stored securely on the server and is deleted within 30 days.
This move comes after Instagram stopped launching Instagram Kids last year after receiving criticism and opposition to the project.
Instagram Kids had to ask parents for permission to participate and provide age-appropriate content without ads, but US lawmakers and advocates put the launch plans on hold due to safety concerns I asked the company.
