The pioneering digital guide, with a particularly modern and user-friendly design, comes to strengthen the candidacy of the Geopark of Nisyros to join the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks
In its network of global geoparks Unesco is preparing to join the Nisyroand the surrounding islets and several steps have already been taken in this direction.
“We have started doing the right things and we expect the UNESCO judges to arrive in Nisyros in October for their decision“, the mayor of Nisyros, Mr. Christofis Koroneios.
The effort started 1.5 years ago and is in its final stage and within August, as Mr. Koronaios emphasizes, a special information office for the Lakki geopark, which apart from the island, will start operating in the port of the island of Nisyros (centered on the volcano) includes the surrounding islands of Strongyli, Pergousa, Pachia and Kandilousa.
On the part of the municipality of Nisyros, special importance is given to this effort and positive results are expected in October, as stated by Mr. Koronaios, expressing his optimism
As part of the preparation effort, the digital guide of the Lakki Hydrothermal Field of the candidate UNESCO World Geopark of Nisyros was completed and released, significantly upgrading the experience of visitors to the famous volcanic craters of the island.
This is a mobile application compatible with Android and iOS, which combines guided tours and interactivity with the unique geological heritage of the active volcanic field, and which is now available not only to the hundreds of visitors the Geopark receives daily, but also to the interested general public.
The original offline digital application (Nisyros Volcano app) for mobiles was created in the context of the cooperation of the Municipal Public Benefit Enterprise of Nisyros (D.K.E.N.) with the scientific team of the Laboratory of Physical Geography of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment (EKPA) and her colleagues, led by associate professor of Law Paraskevi. The modern and updated digital guide highlights with scientific completeness the walking route in Lakki, focusing on three points of interest, highlighting the hydrothermal craters.
Users have the opportunity to explore, at the same time or not with their guided tour, the craters through impressive audiovisual material (high-quality photos, 360o panoramas, drone shots, 2D & 3D digital – high-resolution interactive maps) accompanied by scientifically documented information about the evolution and volcanic activity of Nisyros.
THE pioneering digital guide with a particularly modern and user-friendly design, it comes to strengthen the candidacy of the Geopark of Nisyros for its inclusion in the World Network of UNESCO Geoparks, as well as the essential information of residents and tourists, as well as to cover the existing notable knowledge gap regarding the importance and value of the geodiversity that this unique place has.
The application is available for FREE in Google Play Store and App Store at the following links respectively: https://apps.apple.com/gr/app/nisyros-volcano
