Since the implementation of eco-routes in the US and Canada, it is estimated that more than half a million metric tons of carbon emissions have been avoided.
THE Google announced that it is offering a new useful service through them maps her. It’s about ecological routes which from today are gradually available in Hellas and in almost 40 more countries across Europe. Users can choose the route with the lower fuel consumptionwhich helps not only to save money on fuel, but also to reduce carbon emissions.
In addition to the appearance of the most short route, Google Maps will now also show the most fuel-efficient one, regardless of whether it coincides with the fastest one. With just a few “clicks” one will be able to see the relative fuel savings and time difference between the two routes and choose the one that suits them best.
Imagine, for example, that you are planning a day trip from your home to Athens to Vravrona – about an hour’s drive. To decide how to get there, you open Google Maps, which gives you several route options, including walking, cycling and public transport. Given the length of the trip it makes more sense to drive and immediately look for the fastest route. But what if there were other options – such as a route that would take approx nine minutes more but it would save you almost the 30% of expected fuel consumption?
Eco-routes are already having a positive impact in other countries. From their implementation on USA and Canada, according to Google, they’re estimated to have already helped remove more than half a million metric tons of carbon emissions — the equivalent of 100,000 fewer cars on the road.
The most economical route also depends on the type of engine of the car. For example, the diesel engines they are usually more fuel-efficient at higher speeds than gasoline or gas engines, while hybrid and electric vehicles perform better in traffic conditions. That’s why, in the coming weeks, Google will enable drivers looking for eco-friendly routes in Europe, the US and Canada to list their engine type — gasoline or natural gas, diesel, hybrid or electric vehicle (EV ) — so that they can choose the best route and have the most accurate estimates of fuel or energy efficiency.
THE Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas stated: “With the new service on Google Maps, which will also be available in Greece, citizens will be able to make more environmentally friendly choices, which will also help save money on their daily journeys. Tackling the climate crisis and protecting the environment are more important today than ever.”.
THE Google Marketing Director for Southeast Europe, Maria Fundastated: “We are very pleased to announce the availability of the new eco-routing feature on Google Maps. Thanks to this new function, every person moving in Greece will now be able to choose the route with the lowest fuel consumption, which helps to save money and reduce carbon emissions, all in one move through the application.”
