Huawei beat Apple in the satellite game by announcing the Mate 50 series a day before Apple’s product launch event.

As reported by The Verge, the new Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro come with the ability to send text messages via satellite communications.

Users can send short text messages and use satellite navigation thanks to China’s Beidou global satellite network, which allows communication without a mobile phone signal.

Huawei’s system description says that the Mate 50 phone can only send text messages via satellite, but not receive them.

Satellite text messaging is typically to provide connectivity in emergencies, not to stay in touch when out of cell phone range.

This was rumored to be a long-awaited feature for the new iPhone 14.

In February, satellite company Globalstar acquired 17 new satellites “to provide uninterrupted satellite service to potential customers,” with some speculating that iPhone makers are customers.

Apple enthusiasts also believe that an event called “Far Out” could be a spoiler for new features.

In satellite connectivity, SpaceX has announced a partnership with telecommunications company T-Mobile to use Starlink satellites to provide satellite connectivity for 5G phones.

According to T-Monile, this connection will allow you to send text messages, MMS or use your “preferred messaging application” when the sky is clearly visible, even if traditional services are not available.
