“We discovered water on Ryugu, a near-Earth asteroid, for the first time,” said lead researcher Tomoki Nakamura.
Japanese scientists announced that the dust grains collected by the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa-2 from the Ryugu asteroids and sent to Earth, found – among other things – one water drop. A discovery that strengthens the theory that the life may have developed in space and then transferred to our planet from outside, when asteroids or comets with water “bombarded” the Earth.
“This drop of water is of great significance. Many researchers believe that the water was transported (from space). We actually discovered water on Ryugu, a near-Earth asteroid, for the first time,” Tohoku University’s lead researcher Tomoki Nakamura, who made the relevant publication in the journal “Science,” told AFP.
The Hayabusa-2 it was launched in 2014 and returned to Earth two years ago with a 5.4 gram sample from the asteroid that was 300 million kilometers from Earth. Analyzes so far have already found organic materials and some amino acids, which are the building blocks of life.
