When science meets art: Stunning new NASA images of Europa, Jupiter’s moon

A different detailed look at the pictures taken by the Juno spacecraft a few days ago

New images released by NASA of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa are awe-inspiring, offering a detailed look at the pictures taken by the spacecraft Juno on September 29

JunoCam took its closest image (above) at an altitude of 945 miles (1,521 km) above a region of the moon called Annwn Regio. In the image, the ground is revealed to be rough, pitted.

Numerous bright and dark ridges and bands stretch across a cracked surface, revealing the tectonic stresses the moon has endured over millennia. Callanish Crater can also be seen in the lower right.

JunoCam images processed by scientists often combine the worlds of science and art. In the image on the right, edited by Navaneeth Krishnan, the enhanced color contrast makes the larger surface features stand out more than in the lightly edited version of the image (left).

The small-scale surface texture in the image must be studied carefully to distinguish between features and artifacts from processing, but the image draws us deeper into the alien landscape of Europa.

At the same time, the scientist Fernando Garcia Navarro applied his artistic talent to create this image.

He produced a psychedelic rendition of Europa entitled ‘Fall Colors of Europa’.
