Her deal Turkey with Libya for hydrocarbon exploration “is not in accordance with the international law of the sea”announced today France.

Paris’s position on this “memorandum of understanding” is that “violates sovereign rights of the member states of the European Union, does not comply with the international law of the sea and cannot have legal effects for third states”, as the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs states in its related statement.

It is recalled that not even Berlin recognizes the Turkish-Libyan pact.

“On principle I want to say that a fundamental principle of international law is that two states cannot make agreements to the detriment of third parties. We also know this from civil law. No two can agree, this belongs to me, this to you, this to someone else. In the event that two states conclude an agreement to the detriment of Greece, Greece is not bound by it. The agreement has no legal effect. This is a basic principle of international law, that it is not possible for two states to conclude such an agreement at the expense of a third state,” said a representative of the German Foreign Ministry.
