Social network Parler said on Monday (17) that American rapper Kanye West announced his intention to buy the platform, which has gained popularity among conservatives linked to former US President Donald Trump.

“In a world where conservative views are considered controversial, we must ensure that we have the right to express ourselves freely,” the rapper and mogul, who legally changed his name to Ye, said in Parler’s statement.

The value of the transaction, which is expected to close this quarter, was not disclosed.

Kanye West has been at the center of controversy in recent days, first for wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “White Lives Matter”, a distortion of the famous “Black Lives Matter” that symbolized the anti-racist protests. 2020 in the United States.

His comments on Instagram and Twitter, considered anti-Semitic, also drew attention. His accounts were restricted after these posts, which referenced conspiracy theories about the alleged influence of the Jewish community.

“Ye is taking a revolutionary step in the free speech media space and will never have to worry about being kicked off social media again,” said George Farmer, CEO of Parler. “Once again, Ye shows he is one step ahead of the traditional media narrative,” Farmer added.

Launched in 2018, Parler’s popularity soared after Trump was permanently banned from Twitter following the January 6, 2021 invasion of the Capitol, when the then-president was accused of inciting his supporters to violence.

Disagreeing with the growing threats of violence and illegal activity on the social network, Apple and Google quickly removed it from their download platforms. Subsequently, AWS (Amazon Web Services) also decided to stop hosting it on their servers.

However, it became available again on the App Store in April 2021 and on the Google Play Store a few months later in September.

Parler defines itself as “a driving force in the fight against Big Tech, Big Government, censorship and cancel culture.”

Truth Social, the network launched by Trump, was re-approved by the Google Play Store last week after agreeing to update its policy on removing posts that incite violence.
