NASA’s “supership”: New engine for spaceships for missions in Space – Watch video

The new engine that would be used in spaceships in space missions

As NASA takes its first steady—and arguably big for both humans and humanity—steps toward establishing a long-term presence on the Moon’s surface, a team of propulsion development engineers has developed and tested the first full-scale rotary engine missiles named RDRE.

This is an advanced rocket engine design that could significantly change the way future propulsion systems are built.

The RDRE differs from a traditional rocket engine in that it produces thrust using a supersonic combustion phenomenon known as detonation.

This design produces more power while using less fuel than current propulsion systems and has the potential to power both human-guided craft and interplanetary vehicles to deep space destinations such as the Moon and Mars.

Engineers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville and their lead partner IN Space LLC, located in West Lafayette, are confirming data from 2022 RDRE tests at Marshall’s East Test Area.

The engine fired over a dozen times lasting nearly 10 minutes.

RDRE achieved its primary test objective by demonstrating that its material could function for a long duration while withstanding the extreme heat and pressure created by explosions.

While operating at full throttle, the RDRE produced over 4,000 pounds of thrust for nearly a minute with an average chamber pressure of 622 pounds per square inch, the highest pressure rating for this design on record.
