THE “heart” of the Earth’s inner corethat is, the center of the planet, is probably a ball of iron, which has radius of about 650 kilometersaccording to new scientific estimates.

The researchers from the School of Geosciences of the Australian National University in Canberra, who made the relevant publication in the journal “Nature Communications”, based their calculations on study of seismic waves traveling through it underground of the Earth.

The study found for the first time that these waves “resonate” along the entire diameter of our planet up to five times. The speed at which the waves travel, according to scientists, testifies to the presence of one distinct inner spherewhich is separate from the outer layer of the inner core.

The study of the center of the Earth is considered vital for understanding its creation and evolution. The presence and size of a distinct inner core within the inner core has long been a hypothesis, but also an object of scientific controversy.
