Vast — a California-based startup and one of the youngest companies in the world of private spaceflight — is hoping to build the first commercial space station, in partnership with SpaceX.

Jed McCaleb, founder and CEO of Vast, who previously made a fortune in the cryptocurrency industry, said the company is “thrilled to embark on this journey of launching the world’s first commercial space station, Haven-1, and its first crew, named Vast-1.”

THE Jed McCalebfounder and CEO of Vast, who previously made a fortune in the cryptocurrency industry, said the company is “excited to begin this journey of launching the world’s first commercial space station, Haven-1, and the first of the crew, named Vast-1.”

McCaleb said he is putting $300 million of his own money into the effort and doesn’t plan to seek outside investment for Vast until the company builds its proposed space station and can generate revenue. He added that he recognizes the total project will likely cost him more than $300 million.

It is not certain that Vast will actually become the first company to launch a private space station. According to information, it aims to launch the August 2025. Developing a space station, however, is a highly complex endeavor, requiring extensive testing and essential technology such as life support systems.

Vast will equip its space station Haven-1 with the necessary supplies — like oxygen and other life-sustaining materials — but without having to develop a life support system from scratch, McCaleb told CNN.

Other companies – including many with its support NASA – are also working on the development of private space stations. NASA, along with its global partners, is seeking to use a privately developed space station to replace the aging International Space Station, which has been continuously inhabited in low Earth orbit since 2000.

The Biden-Harris administration and officials in Canada, Japan and European Space Agency participating countries have authorized the ISS to remain operational until 2030. But the other key partner on the International Space Station, Russia, has said it will guarantee the participation only until 2028.

It’s unclear how much of the $300 million McCaleb has earmarked for the Haven-1 project will go to SpaceX for launch services. Vast did not share financial details about its deal with the company.

The simple Haven-1 space station will be able to launch atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

After the spacecraft is sent into orbit, SpaceX will provide training to four yet-to-be-named crew members for the Vast-1 mission.

Initially, the company plans for Haven-1 to operate independently, floating freely in Earth orbit. He later plans to attach the spacecraft as a unit to a larger space station.

The company’s ultimate goal is to create a massive space station in orbit with artificial gravity that could launch on top of a SpaceX Starship vehicle.
