Google’s London offices cost $ 1 billion

Despite the fact that telecommuting is booming due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Google announced the purchase for the sum of 1 billion dollars of a building complex, which houses part of its offices in London.

The American technology giant is also constructing a monumental new space, covering more than 90,000 square meters, in the King Cross district, a plan that has already been announced and is expected to be completed within the next two years.

“With the acquisition of these offices, which it has been renting to date,” Google will be able to accommodate 10,000 employees on its premises in Britain, including the new King Cross project, “the company said in a press release today.

Google employs more than 6,400 people in the country so far, almost 700 of whom it hired last year.

Following the “explosion” of telecommuting with the pandemic, this market in St. Giles, in the heart of the British capital, “testifies to Google’s continued reliance on the office as part of a close collaboration and connection,” according to the press release.

The Californian company intends to invest “many millions of pounds” in renovating the complex, with “new areas of cooperation” that can be structured in different ways, according to needs, as well as covered outdoor areas “so that one can work in the clean air ».

This complex of three buildings and surrounding a central public square was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. It hosts other businesses, which will not be affected by the change of owner.

The investment announced today “is a significant vote of confidence in Britain as a leading technology hub” and “proof that the country remains one of the most attractive places in the world to grow their business”, welcomed Finance Minister Risi Sunak, in a message on Twitter.
