Retirement of Elon Musk. Twitter has finally agreed to comply with the tough new laws of the EU on fake news, Russian propaganda and cybercrime after a team of European Commission officials visited its headquarters to test its ability to operate legally in Europe. The move comes just weeks after Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, withdrew from the voluntary code practice of the European bloc on disinformation.

In the first test of its kind, EU officials were allowed to enter the company’s headquarters on Thursday for to conduct a stress test with Twitter staff to test its controls on Russian propaganda, fake news and criminal activity, including child sexual exploitation.

THE Thierry Breton, the commissioner responsible for enforcing the new digital services law, welcomed the fact that the company had voluntarily agreed to the trial. He reiterated his warning to all social media companies that EU to act swiftly and decisively to comply with sweeping new laws coming into force in August. “When it comes to cybercrime, there can be no half measures. “Very large online platforms must put in place the necessary internal controls and resources to be ready for the new European rules,” explained Breton.

The new laws are set effective August 25, but EU fears that Twitter might not comply had grown, with the commissioner recently warning the company that a “wild west” type operation would not be toleratedand Musk to react strongly.

H Linda Giaccarino, Twitter’s new CEO, thanked Thierry Breton for the platform’s cooperation with the EU.
