The video of a toddler somewhere in Asia who is sleeping restlessly, moving his hands as if “scrolling” on an invisible tablet screen and crying, has made the rounds of the internet in the last few hours, causing regrets to parents all over the world who at some point have give in to their tiredness and despair and have given their child a screen to sit still for even a little while

The video has garnered millions of views and thousands of comments, with most users describing it as “scary” and “disturbing”.

Scientific studies have shown that preschool children who frequently use electronic devices with screens are more likely to experience emotional and behavioral problems, such as hyperactivity, distraction, difficulty forming friendships, and even anxiety.

How long should children have the tablet?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics – which has set the times an infant and toddler can use a device – babies in the first 18 months should not be exposed to a screen at all (screens include television).

From 18 to 24 months the toddler can use a screen for a maximum of 30 minutes a day, always with the parent’s supervision and watching specific programs.

From 2 to 5 years, the toddler can be occupied with a screen for up to an hour, and after 5 years the time in front of a screen increases to one and a half hours a day and from two hours on Saturday and Sunday.
