Sony Revenge at Microsoft: Acquires Bungie Game Studio for $ 3.6 Billion

Sony has announced that Bungie will help it “reach billions of players”. Halo is one of the iconic games that contributed to Microsoft’s Xbox popularity.

“This is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of the PlayStation to a much wider audience,” said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).

“We understand how vital the Bungie community is to the studio and we look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow,” he said.

In 2000, Microsoft bought Bungie and the game Halo: Combat Evolved was made Exclusive title for Xbox. Halo has sold millions of copies, helping to spread the Xbox to users.

In 2007, Bungie split from Microsoft to become an independent enterprise. Microsoft, however, retained the golden intellectual property of the Halo franchise. Bungie, based in Washington state, has more than 900 employees.

Under the Sony agreement, Bungie will have an independent operation, and will continue to create its own games after the acquisition is completed.

Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled plans to buy video game giant Activision Blizzard for $ 68.7 billion, the largest deal ever made in the gaming market.
