The exhausted smiley face emoji was honored to win the ‘Most Anticipated’ emoji at the World Emoji Awards by receiving more than 60% of the vote
Finally, an emoji we can all identify with is coming to our phones soon: An exhausted smiley with dark circles under the eyes.
This is one of the 8 new emojis that will make their appearance on smartphones and computers in the coming year. These include a root vegetable, a harp, a leafless tree, a spade, a purple splash and a flag for the remote Channel Island called Sark.
Emojipedia, a popular emoji reference site, released sample images a few months ago. Recently, the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization that oversees global emoji standards and new releases, approved the new emoji series.
Smartphone users can start using the new emoji on “various digital devices in the coming months and throughout 2025,” Emojipedia said.
The “tired” emoji
The exhausted smiley face emoji had the honor of winning the “most anticipated” emoji at the World Emoji Awards by receiving more than 60% of the votes. The purple splash and spade came in second and third, respectively.
While these may be silly, the leafless tree is meant to raise awareness on drought and climate changeaccording to Brian Baihaki, who submitted it to the Unicode Consortium.
“Drought is part of the climate cycle, for millions of years trees have adapted to these harsh conditions,” Baihaki wrote. “But the climate is changing, drought is becoming more frequent, intense and even spreading to other places in a short period of time.”
Different operating services, such as Apple iOS and Alphabet’s Android, and companies put their own spin on emoji designs.
Interpretations can lead to controversy, such as Google’s misplacement of foam somehow floating above a half-full beer glass and mixing up the ingredients (with cheese at the bottom) in the hamburger emoji. Both were fixed.
