Interdisciplinary Risk Management Committee and Crisis was formed by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, following a decision by the Rector, Gerasimos Siassos, on the occasion of the seismicity of Santorini and the scientific concerns that have arisen.

The team, co -ordinated by Efthimios Lekkas, who is already in Santorini, will be tasked with focusing on the study and management of seismic dangers, providing documented analyzes and proposals for the protection of local communities.

The creation of interdisciplinary scientific risk and crisis management reinforces the role of the University as a pillar of knowledge, innovation and social offering. Our goal is to develop a powerful durability mechanism that will contribute to better preparation and response to critical situations“, Mr Siasos said.

In more detail, according to a statement from the NCSR, the objectives of the Interdisciplinary Committee will be as follows:

  • The promotion of research in all three stages of disaster and crisis management and the production of innovative ideas, services and suggestions,
  • Risk-analysis, the estimation of vulnerability of structures and infrastructure and the assessment of systems risk,
  • Operational planning and disaster management organization at every level of administration,
  • The operational coordination of national and international missions in areas affected by disasters,
  • Specialized medical care and psychological support victims of disaster and
  • Promoting citizens’ awareness of natural disasters and management through events, conferences, lectures, educational programs and other related actions.

This new initiative, according to the NCSR, is part of the university’s constant commitment to promote scientific knowledge and to enhance the resilience to modern challenges, such as natural disasters, health crises, technological risks and social risks.

Efthimios Lekkas, Emeritus Professor of Geology and Geoenvironment and Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Committee, conducts autopsies in Santorini, participates in meetings of the local Civil Coordinating Coordination Body and coordinates the meetings of the two Committees and the two Committees Risk and the permanent scientific monitoring committee of the Hellenic Volcano Bill) of the Anti -Seismic Planning and Protection Organization.

In addition, a specialized step of physicians and nurses with extensive experience of corresponding events (such as the earthquake in Kos) and headed by Professor E. Pikoulis, have been trained by the World Health Organization in Massive Events Management with an emphasis on the organization of health units for large number victims.
