An investment of € 12 billion in a decade, under the name Project Clover, is promoted by the Tiktok social networking platform to protect the data of European users.

As said by Tiktok, head of government relations and public policy, in his exclusive interview with RES-EIA, in the framework of the 10th Delphi Economic Forum, this investment “puts innovative security measures for our European users ‘security measures for our European users’ data, Group. With the protection of data at its center, this initiative aims to set a new model for data security on online platforms, while allowing safe global data flow and continuing innovation. ”

As Mr. Bellini points out, “Tiktok is a platform created to inspire creativity and bring joy (our mission), so it was designed with the content to have the first word and not their users or relationships.” And he adds: “The safety of our users and their data is one of our top priorities.”

Tiktok is a growing/blossoming community with over 1 billion people worldwide, 150 million users in the European Union and 175 million in Europe as a continent.

Tiktok has 4.3 million monthly users in Greece (March – December 2024 according to DSA methodology), creating both macro – and small – communities around interests such as travel, food, sports, economic education and more. These communities are built by everyday people from different social backgrounds and generations.

Also, according to Mr Bellini, “the platform has been created to inspire creativity and bring joy, so it was designed with the content to have the first reason and not their users or relationships”

How can the average social networks user be protected? What should every user have in mind in this direction?

“The safety of our users and their data is one of our top priorities. It is important to emphasize that Tiktok is committed to ensuring the security of European users’ data through strict controls and protocols, “Bellini said.

For example, the access of the data to the data is subject to strict multilevel of approval and identification protocols, which are approved on a case -by -case basis and only when they are absolutely necessary for the performance of their duties.

Tiktok invests over € 12 billion in Project Clover to boost European users’ data protection.

Despite already strict safety protocols, the project introduces additional measures such as storing sensitive data within the European zone and the use of advanced privacy technologies (PET), such as pseudonymization and differential privacy.

Under the independent supervision of the NCC Group (cyber security specialist), Tiktok ensures that access to data is regulated by strict security measures that exceed the current standards of industry.

Project Clover

Tiktok has been implementing Project Clover from 2023, an investment of 12 billion euros for 10 years, setting innovative security measures for our European users’ data, including independent supervision by the European NCC Group cyber security company. With the protection of data at its center, this initiative aims to set a new model for data security on online platforms, while allowing safe global data flow and continuing innovation. The ability to share the evolution of Tiktok at the Delphi Economic Forum is important to Tiktok and highlights the value we give to open and transparent communication on our security work and protection standards.

Tiktok faces a fine of € 500 million for allegedly illegal European users’ data to China. How safe can Tiktok users feel about using their personal data?

“These are speculations mentioned by some media,” replies Bellini.

European users’ data is stored by default in our European zone, which is based on Europe and the US. This is part of the Project Clover, which Tiktok has been implementing 12 billion euros for 10 years, which has been putting innovative security measures for our European users’ data, including independent supervision by the European NCC Group. With the protection of data at its center, this initiative aims to set a new model for data security on online platforms, while allowing safe global data flow and continuing innovation.

Even before the introduction of Project Clover, access to users’ data was already strictly controlled, with Tiktok employees only accessing the information they needed to perform their work and even under strict conditions for a limited period of time.
