It took place yesterday at 23:30 (local time in Greece), the launch of the Duthsat-2, the first Cubesat satellite, under the National Microddian Program with the support of the European Space Service (ESA).
The launch was done by the US Vadenberg base with Falcon-9 rocket as part of SpaceX’s Transporter-14 mission.
Duthsat-2 ((Democritus University of Thrace Satellite 2) weighing 7 kg, traveled for about an hour with the Falcon-9 rocket along with other satellites and was released into orbit at an altitude of 510km from the surface of the sea.
Then follow a thorough orbital placement process commencement of operational operation.
Within at least 6 months of successful communication with the satellite and launch of its operation, DuthSat-2 will confirm the orbit of new land observation devices (visual cameras) and secure connectivity (telecommunications systems).
“We have the first Greek flag satellite in the context of the National Microfore Program, as the first launch for the most research and purpose of the Cubesat technology program was successfully held. […] This is only the beginning of the Greek presence in space. The national microfinance program reinforces our country’s potential in critical areas such as civil protection, environmental monitoring and safe communication. Apart from the fact that we expand our potential in many fields in this way, we also create a domestic space ecosystem, interconnecting scientists, institutions, research centers, universities and Greek companies with international developments in technology and innovation.
The Greek DuthSat-2
DuthSat-2 satellite was designed and manufactured by a scientific team of Democritus University of Thracein collaboration with Greek companies. The aim of this project is to enhance the country’s potential in the field of land observation and safe space communication.
DuthSat-2 will provide images and measurementsto be used to provide information about soil moisture as well as for sea pollution.
In addition, spectral recording frequencies and camera analysis have been selected in such a way that they can be identified so much Oil leaks as well as pollution from rejection of ballast waters. At the same time, there will be a demonstration in the flight of a new basic telemetry unit and operating status.
Essential Telemetry and Housekeeping (ETM) is the space version of the “black box”, allowing operators to have a picture of the satellite in the event of the main subsystems failure.
The mission is part of an integrated national strategy for exploiting space technologies in the treatment of natural disasters, monitoring the environment and enhancing civil protection.
“The successful implementation of the DUTHSAT-2 mission marks the start of a series of Greek microfibers, which will follow in the coming period, further enhancing the country’s operational and technological capabilities. In November, two more cubesats will be launched by consortiums of Greek companies, “the ministry also said in a statement.
“The national microfinance program, implemented under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Governance and funded by the Recovery and Revolution Fund, is a strategic investment in the country’s innovation, sovereignty, durability and technological autonomy.
It incorporates human scientific potential, Greek universities, domestic industry and consolidates Greece’s position as an active member of European space policy, “the ministry added.
