The New Moon, announced Tuesday by the US Space Service NASA, appears to be just 10 kilometers wide.
It was identified by the Webb’s Near Infrared Camera during observations in February.
Scientists believe it has been hiding for so long – even escaping the Voyager 2 spaceship on its flight about 40 years ago – due to its dimness and its small size.
The sky has 28 well -known moons that have been named after Shakespeare’s and Alexander Pope’s characters. About half are small and rotate around the planet at a shorter distance, according to Euronews.
The New Moon, which is not yet named, raises the total number of moonings on the planet to 29.
The new addition could indicate more small moons around the sky, said scientist Matthew Tiscareno of the American Institute of Seti, who participated in the discovery.
“There are probably much more of them and we just have to continue looking,” Tiscareno said.
Other planets in the solar system have even more moons. Saturn has 274 well -known moons, while Zeus has 95, Neptune has 16, Mars has two, Earth has one and Hermes and Aphrodite have no one, according to NASA.
