The countdown to the end of Windows 10 may have begun, but users – individuals and businesses – seem to be reluctant to move on to the next day. According to a Kaspersky study, more than half of computers around the world still use the Microsoft operating system, which ceases to be supported in October 2025.
The figures come from Kaspersky Security Network and captures an image that worries cyber security experts. Despite warnings, 53% of users still use Windows 10, while only 33% have gone to the latest version, Windows 11.
53% of users and nearly 60% of businesses still operate with Windows 10, one month before support expires
Even more worrying is that 8.5% continues to operate with Windows 7, a operating system not already supported by 2020.
The situation is even more complicated in the business world. Nearly 6 out of 10 corporate computers run Windows 10, with small businesses showing corresponding rates (51%).
At the same time, over 6% of companies are still based on Windows 7, exposing their networks to serious risks. The use of earlier operating means not only more vulnerability in cyberattacks, but also possible incompatibility with newer software and security solutions – which can cause operational problems and financial damage.
The reasons for the delay
The reasons behind this “delay” are not young. For many users, upgrades are considered expensive or unnecessary, as they often bring minor changes to functions, but large variations in daily habits. However, experts warn: an unsupported functional is like a home with loose foundations. “The risks clearly outweigh the small difficulties of transition”Kaspersky.
Early transition to a newer version is considered critical, especially for business sections, which manage sensitive data. Installation of security updates, activation of automatic upgrades and the use of advanced protection solutions can drastically reduce the risk of breach.
The image, revealed by the research, shows that the transition in the future is slowly steps. But, as he notes, with the end of Windows 10 support in just one month, the delays turn into a real threat.
For individuals it means an increased risk of cyberattacks, for businesses, data losses, costs and damage to their credibility. “The dilemma is not technological, but strategic: adaptation and shielding or exposure to a world of cyber thicks who does not forgive inactivity”the company concludes.
