Elon Musk wants a majority of America to be on Twitter

by

Elon Musk said on Monday that he intends to expand Twitter’s reach beyond its current niche until the majority of Americans are users of the social network.

Musk has struck a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion, raising doubts among employees and the public about his strategy for managing social media.

The billionaire told reporters gathered on the red carpet at the annual Met Gala in New York that an important metric of success will be the ability to significantly expand Twitter’s audience.

“Right now it’s kind of a niche. I want a much larger percentage of the country to be in it, engaged in dialogue,” said Musk, who attended the celebrity-packed event with his mother Maye Musk, a model.

Twitter has about 40 million daily active users in the United States, according to the company’s most recent result.

Musk revealed the intention for the platform to be “as comprehensive as possible, where ideally most of the US is on it and talking” and for the social network to be as reliable as possible.

The billionaire also said he will make Twitter transparent about how tweets are promoted or demoted and wants the company’s software publicly available for criticism.

Asked about a possible exodus of employees following the sale of the company, Musk said: “It’s a free country.”

“Of course, if someone isn’t comfortable with that, they’ll willingly go somewhere else. That’s fine,” Musk said.
