The Kryoneri Observatory is located at an altitude of about 900m on Mount Kyllini (Ziria) near the village of Kryoneri in the prefecture of Corinth. It is owned by the National Observatory of Athens and was founded in 1972.
According to dronedays.gr, this is the largest telescope in the world in this category that from 2017 until today observes the fall of primordial asteroids and meteorites on the Moon and this is because the largest space organizations want to study these phenomena which potentially can become dangerous to the earth.
The mirror telescope, in its original configuration, was of the Cassegrain type with a primary parabolic mirror (diam. 1.2m), a secondary hyperbolic (diam. 0.27m) and a focal ratio of f / 13. It was built and installed in 1975.
In May 2016, the telescope was upgraded as part of the NELIOTA program. The upgrade included the replacement of some mechanical parts of the telescope, a new control system, dome automation and the installation of a Prime Focus Instrument (PFI) capable of providing a field of view (with a focal ratio of f / 2.8) as required for observations of lunar impacts ( Xilouris et al. 2018).
