Nelson de Sá: Abroad, death of black man in ‘gas chamber’ refers to George Floyd

by

Faced with the videos showing the death of a black man by police in Sergipe, attention grew in the external news with the shooting of lethal police operations in Brazil.

In English The Guardian, “Indignation in Brazil with death of mentally ill black man in ‘gas chamber’ of police car”. Just below, “video shows police forcing him into a vehicle and releasing a gas grenade”.

In Spanish El País, “Man dies in a car in Brazil where police arrested him with tear gas”.

In the Agence France Presse, “Brazil: Man dies of asphyxiation with gas in the trunk of a police car”. In Argentina’s Télam, “Brazil: police killed psychiatric patient by putting him in a trunk with gas”.

According to the Guardian, “the gruesome death produced shock in Brazil, where lethal police violence is common and disproportionately affects the black population.” It highlights that it takes place two years after the death of George Floyd in the USA.

El País reports that “President Jair Bolsonaro, who congratulated the police officers who participated in the bloody operation in the Rio de Janeiro favela, preferred not to comment on this latest case, recorded with a cell phone.”

Until then, coverage of recent police violence was punctual, in vehicles such as the French Libération or the German network ARD.
