Two civilians were killed and five wounded in the bombing, which was carried out by Russian troops on the outskirts of the Ukrainian city of Sheverodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast, according to Governor Serhiy Gaidai.
According to Gaidai, Russian troops are attacking the city with all kinds of weapons and with the support of the air force, while they have entered the southeastern and northeastern regions of Sheverodonetsk.
“Unfortunately we have disappointing news, the enemy is moving towards the city,” he said on state television.
The Russians are advancing towards the center of Sheverodonetsk
Russian forces are advancing towards the center of Sheverodonetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine that has been bombed for weeks and where heavy fighting is raging in the streets, Luhansk provincial governor Serhiy Gaidai said today.
“The Russians are advancing towards the center of Sheverodonetsk. The fighting is continuing, the situation is very difficult,” Gaidai told the Telegram.
According to him, two civilians were injured today when their car was targeted, but are now “in a safe place”, however three doctors are missing.
“The critical infrastructure of Sheverodonetsk has been destroyed, 60% of the houses can not be restored,” Gaidai added.
The governor of Luhansk province has warned that the road linking Sheverodonetsk with the twin city of Lysichansk and then Bakhmut, further south, is too “dangerous” for civilians to be evacuated or for humanitarian aid to pass.
On Sunday, Gaidai said a Russian attack was under way in Sheverodonetsk, with street battles raging in the city, adding that the situation in Lisichansk had “deteriorated”.
Sheverodonetsk, a city of 100,000 before the war, has been bombed for weeks by Russian artillery and separatist guerrillas. Dozens of civilians have been killed there.
Sheverodonetsk and Lisichansk are located more than 80 kilometers east of Kramatorsk, which became the administrative center of Ukrainian Donbass after pro-Russian separatist rebels occupied the eastern part of the valley in 2014.
