British publication: Turkey haggles pseudo-state status with Sweden-Finland accession

by

Turkey considers putting the status of the pseudo-state of Cyprus on the table in order to accept its accession Sweden and Finland in NATO, according to an article in the British newspaper Express.

A source close to the “president” of the pseudo-state, Ersin Tatarconfirmed that he called the president Erdogan to call for the pseudo-state to be put on the NATO table.

The source said: “I know the phone call was made and I understand that President Tatar has received a positive response. Why not use every pressure lever we can in this situation? “Greece and Cyprus have used their veto in the EU to prevent any progress and it is time to resolve this injustice.”

Ersin Tatar revealed in an interview with Sunday Express that its aim is to recognize the occupied territories as an independent state.

At the same time, he seems to believe that efforts to reunite the two sides of Cyprus are now in vain.

Meanwhile, Erdogan appears uncompromising on the issue of the two Nordic countries joining NATO. He said yesterday that talks with the Finnish and Swedish missions last week were not in «expected level “and that Ankara can not say” yes “to countries «who support terrorism “.

«“As long as Tayyip Erdogan leads the Republic of Turkey, it is certain that we can not say ‘yes’ to the entry of countries that support terrorism,” said the Turkish president.

Saying that Sweden and Finland had expectations from these talks, Erdogan said the two countries had not taken the necessary steps regarding Turkey’s demands, noting that terrorists were still walking the streets of Stockholm, while Sweden protects “with its own police”.

«“We can not repeat the mistakes made in the past (allowing countries to join NATO, which is a security organization) while they support and reinforce such terrorists,” the Turkish president reiterated.

Sweden and Finland formally applied to join NATO on May 18, a decision they were pushed by by Russia’s war in Ukraine that began on February 24. Turkey, a longtime member of the alliance, has voiced opposition to their membership demands, criticizing the two countries for tolerating or even supporting terrorist groups.
