Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a private message to the Brazilian Chief Executive, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), lamenting the destruction caused by the rains in Greater Recife, Pernambuco.
“Russia shares the grief of those who lost their relatives and loved ones as a result of the rampant natural disaster and hopes for a speedy recovery for all victims,” Putin said in a message to Bolsonaro and reposted on an official Russian communication channel on Telegram.
Over the weekend, rains in Recife increased and caused landslides, leaving people homeless and leading to deaths.
In terms of the number of victims buried in the same place, this is already considered the second worst point of the tragedies that devastated the metropolitan region of Recife – at least 91 people died, according to the Civil Defense.
Bolsonaro reinforced his rapprochement with Putin in the week before the war with Ukraine broke out. The Brazilian president traveled to Russia and, despite the tensions between the nations that now face each other, denied having discussed the matter with Putin.
In early May, as informed by UOL columnist Jamil Chad, Bolsonaro suggested to the Turkish authorities the creation of a kind of entourage of presidents to visit Putin in Moscow.
The proposal was described by a number of diplomats within the Foreign Ministry as being “megalomaniac”, while on the side of the mediators in the conflict with Ukraine, the perception is that the moment is not for a “show”, but for backstage negotiations. .
Meanwhile, Russia is waging a 96-day war against Ukraine. At the end of February, the country led by Putin invaded the neighboring nation in search of greater influence in Ukrainian territory, motivated by Ukraine’s attempt to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
