A boy found dead in a suitcase found in a rural forest in Indiana last month died of dehydration.
According to a death report, the boy died of viral gastroenteritis or an electrolyte imbalance that was likely due to gastroenteritis, Indiana police said Friday.
Investigators believe he was about five years old when the unidentified boy died.
The autopsy report concluded that the body “did not sustain any serious trauma”. This means there was no anatomical cause of death, police said. The child’s hematologic toxicity was also negative.
“The detective also said there was no evidence the baby was alive, clothed and clean when he was placed in a suitcase,” a police news release said.
A mushroom picker found a suitcase containing the boy’s body in the woods. After making a terrifying discovery, the man immediately called 911 and reported the baby’s body to the police.
According to police, he was found trapped in the hard shell of a suitcase with “a unique Las Vegas design on the front and back.”
Police were unable to identify a suspected black boy between the ages of 5 and 8, who was around 4 feet tall, had a slim body and had short hair. According to reports, he died on April 16, a week before his discovery.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the boy is out of state or abroad.
“Investigators continue to use a variety of investigative methods and have worked with various outside agencies during this investigation,” police said.
“Although many tips were given across the country, the detective was unable to identify the child. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the boy is out of state or abroad.
Hundreds of clues were provided, police said, but the boy could not be clearly identified.
