The Mountain Lion cub went to a high school in California on Wednesday morning and the parents locked him safely in the classroom a few hours later before dropping him off, authorities said.
Detective Javier Acosta of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said Pescadero High School opened for the school day when Bell was discovered.
At the time of the animals’ discovery, there were no students or teachers on the school campus.
According to the Oakland Zoo, which currently cares for mountain lions, the cubs that entered the building were likely 6 to 8 months old.
“Employees and deputies can isolate Puma in the classroom, without an imminent threat,” the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said on social media.
According to the sheriff’s office, Bell was discovered Wednesday at 8:30 am as prison officials were preparing to open a school. The caretaker trapped the animal in one of the classrooms and set it up later before removing it from the building.
It is unknown how Bell enrolled in a school located about 30 miles west of San Jose.
The parents closed the door to the English room which was hugged to keep the doorbell closed. Authorities then called the California Fish and Wildlife Service to help remove the animals from the building.
Acosta said school staff “tried to leave,” but Bell stayed in classrooms and buildings because he was “lost and scared.”
As a precaution, students and staff went home that day.
Zoo officials said Bell was sent to the Oakland Zoo and said the animals were too young to survive independently. The cougars have learned from their mothers for the first two years of their lives and have not found any cougars near the school.
Bell was identified as male and was initially found to be hiding under the teacher’s desk.
