Steam Burns A woman was taken to a hospital with steam burns after two wells exploded in downtown Boston.
The blast shattered windows and sent smoke into the streets, prompting the evacuation of two buildings.
The explosion was reported around 8:30 am in the city’s financial district near High Street and Federal Street.
The cause of the explosion is currently unknown, but Deputy Fire Chief Brian Tally told a news conference that “there may have been excessive pressure.”
The Boston Fire Department said on Twitter that two buildings had been evacuated and one was taken to a hospital by emergency medical services.
According to Tally, the woman was probably burned by steam.
After the explosion, the fire department inspected buildings in the area for high levels of smoke and carbon monoxide.
The power provider’s spokesman, William Hinkle, said Eversource Transmission also responded to assist in the investigation.
He said the utility crew was not working in the area at the time and none of the subscribers were losing power.
The emergency response also caused traffic headaches.
According to the State Department, two of the 93 lamps were closed and some shallow streets were also closed.
