At least three people died and 60 were injured after a train derailed in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany on Friday (3).
Several cars on the train, which had left Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a town in Bavaria with a famous ski resort, derailed in Burgrain, on the outskirts of the city, Bavarian police said in a statement. The trip was bound for Munich.
“Relief and evacuation operations continue,” the police added. Rescuers were also sent from Austria to help with the rescue.
There were several schoolchildren on board, according to a report by the regional newspaper Muenchener Merkur, citing the local newspaper Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The victims were treated at the scene by doctors, and 16 injured are in serious condition. The cause of the accident was not disclosed.
Photos released by German media show the train derailed, with its wagons bent, in a wooded area.
A police spokesman said the train was quite full at the time of the accident.
Regional trains have been receiving more passengers since June 1, when a ticket allowing travel throughout Germany came into effect.
