Armenia: Dozens injured in anti-government protests in Yerevan

According to Yerevan police, security forces used stun grenades to repel protesters who were stoning them.

Officers clashed Friday with protesters in Gerevan, in the last one of a series of anti -government demonstrations in the Armenian capital, resulting in more than 50 people being admitted to hospitals, according to the Reuters agency citing Russian Ria Novosti.

In a video released by the RIA, angry protesters are seen throwing bottles at police as explosions are heard.

According to Yerevan police, security forces used stun grenades to repel protesters who were stoning them.

According to the Armenian Ministry of Health, 34 police officers injured in the incidents had to be treated.

Pressure on Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian has escalated following a rapprochement with Azerbaijan to normalize relations between the two countries. The Azerbaijani army had been imposed by Armenian forces in the Six-Week War in 2020.

The war over the status of Nagorno-Karabakh enclave ended with a peace agreement – mediated by Russia – which led to a significant loss of territory for Armenia.
