Zelensky: Ukraine to become EU candidate country in coming weeks

Kyiv hopes that the 27 will grant candidate status to Ukraine at the June 23rd and 24th summit.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky expressed in his sermon last night the certainty that Ukraine will become a candidate country in the coming weeksdespite Germany ‘s reluctance to support the admission process.

«This will be a decision not only for Ukraine, but for the whole European project“, Said Mr. Zelenski, adding that will decide whether the EU has a “future” or not.

The European Commission is expected to decide soon how to proceed with the request for membership submitted by Kyiv immediately after the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory on February 24.

The Chancellor of Germany, the Olaf Soltshas made it clear how does not believe that the accession process should be accelerated in the case of Ukraine. Although other EU member states strongly support Kiev’s request, Berlin remains reluctant.
