Less than eight hours after she was elected prime minister by parliament, Magdalena Anderson was forced to step down after lawmakers voted against the government’s budget, leading to the exit of the ruling Green Party.
“There is a constitutional practice that wants the coalition government to resign when a party leaves it. “I do not want to be the head of a government whose legitimacy is being questioned,” Sweden’s first female prime minister told a news conference.
“I told the president (of parliament) that I want to resign as prime minister,” he said, adding that he would try to form a one-party government and win a vote of confidence again.
The Greens announced earlier that they were leaving the ruling coalition because the budget was voted down in parliament. “We wanted to have the approval to promote green policies. “It is not the job of the Greens to implement a budget negotiated by the Swedish Democrats,” said Martha Steveni, the party’s co-chair.
The government budget was rejected, while the corresponding bill promoted by three right-wing parties, including the anti-immigrant party of the Swedish Democrats, was passed.
