THE European Commission suggest agreement in the EU Member States with Egypt and Israel to boost gas imports from the eastern Mediterranean, according to a draft document dated 7 June Reuters.
The draft Memorandum of Understanding, which is subject to possible changes and needs the approval of the governments involved, is part of the European Union’s efforts to reduce fossil fuel imports from Russia after the war in Ukraine.
«The gas sent to the European Union will come from either the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Israel, or any other source in the Eastern Mediterranean region, including EU Member States in the region.“, The 9-page document stated.
The EU has publicly stated that it intends to complete one tripartite agreement with Egypt and Israel before the summerbut the details in the June 7 draft were not made public.
The draft agreement establishes the principles of enhanced cooperation between the three partners but does not say how much gas the EU will import, nor does it set delivery schedules.
The document stated that the missions will include the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in Egyptunderlining the North African country’s plan to become a regional hub for natural gas.
The memorandum of understanding will have valid for nine years from his signature, according to the document, although this point is in parentheses, an indication that there are chances of it changing.
