The Council also adopted a recommendation on operational police cooperation, as well as general approaches to the directive on the exchange of information between law enforcement authorities.
On Friday 10 June, the Vice-President of the Commission, Margaritis Schoinas and the Commissioner Johnson attended Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg, where the ministers noted substantial progress on in the new Pact on Immigration and Asylum. The ministers, the vast majority, approved a statement on one voluntary solidarity mechanism, preparing the ground for an agreement on the Eurodac Regulation and the Screening Regulation. The last meeting of the Council under the French Presidency also made significant progress on Schengen and police cooperation.
The Commission presented first report on the Schengen situation and welcomed the approval by the ministers of the political priorities for the period 2022-2023 and the new model of Schengen governance. Ministers also agreed on amendments to the Schengen Borders Code, thus implementing one of the key priorities identified in the report. The Council also approved it successfully recommendation on operational police cooperation, as well as general approaches to the directive on the exchange of information between law enforcement authorities and the regulation on automated data exchange for police cooperation (“Prüm II”).
With regard to Ukraine, Commissioner Johnson presented the progress made under the 10-point plan for stronger European coordination on welcoming people trying to escape the war in Ukraine.
