Equality: The competition for the 2023 Accessible City Award begins

The Vice President for Values ​​and Transparency Mr. Viera Giurova stated in this regard: “The Accessible City Award honors our European cities committed to promoting the values ​​of equality and integration within our Union. “On the occasion of the thirteenth award ceremony, I call on every EU city to propose innovative initiatives to remove the barriers faced by people with disabilities.”

Equality Commissioner Helena Daly added: “87 million people in the EU are disabled and therefore at risk of discrimination or exclusion in day-to-day operations such as the use of transport, communication and access to buildings and information. The Accessible City Award rewards cities that try to overcome these barriers. “I look forward to discovering the many efforts being made in our Union to make our cities more accessible and more equitable for people with disabilities.”

The winning city will receive a cash prize of 150,000 euros, while the second and third prizes are accompanied by 120,000 euros and 80,000 euros respectively.

The competition, organized by the European Commission in collaboration with the European Disability Forum, is aimed at EU cities with over 50,000 inhabitants.

The awards will be announced at a conference to be held on November 25 on the occasion of the European Day of Persons with Disabilities. Examples of actions that were awarded or were finalists in 2022 can be seen here. Nominations for this year’s award are open until September 8 on its website Accessible City Award 2023.
