Alexei Navalny, a Kremlin prison critic, was transferred from the penal colony to an unknown location, the aide said.

His team said it did not know where anti-corruption activist Vladimir Putin and his most prominent critics of his Russian aides had been taken.

The 46-year-old returned to Russia in January 2021 after recovering in a German hospital following an assassination attempt by the Russian Security Agency.

He was arrested shortly after his plane crashed in Moscow and has been in jail ever since.

Lawyers and presidential candidates were initially sentenced to two and a half years in prison, but in March they were sentenced to nine years for fraud and contempt of court.

Navalny is widely considered a political prisoner, and his supporters, including the Western government, say the accusations against him are false.

The Kremlin or other authorities in Russia have not commented on where he was taken.

“I don’t know where Alexei is now and in what colony,” Navalny’s chief of staff Leonid Volkov told Telegram.

Another spokeswoman, Kira Yarmish, said she learned she had been transferred after hours to a former prison where lawyers were awaiting information.

He wrote on Twitter:

Judges critical of the Ukraine War were told by the judges when their sentencing was raised that they would be sent to high-security facilities with more restricted access to visits and outside communications.

He had previously served a prison term in the Second Penal Colony, the Pokrov detention center, 74 miles east of Moscow.

Navalny’s allies and activists have been arrested or deported by the police, which the state calls “radicals.”

His team confirmed two weeks ago that he had been charged in a new criminal case.

Prosecutors allege that he created an extremist organization and accuse him of inciting hatred of the authorities and crimes of up to 15 years in prison.
