Germany: Federal Court upholds AfD lawsuit against former Chancellor A. Merkel

by

A spokesman for the former chancellor said today that “Angela Merkel certainly respects the Court’s ruling”, without elaborating on the substance of the matter.

To Federal Constitutional Court justified the Alternative for Germany (AfD), who had appealed accusing the former chancellor Angela Merkel that he had discriminated against the party when, while on an official trip abroad, he had sharply criticized him and asked not to join the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) in a coalition government with the AfD in Thuringia.

Following the state elections in Thuringia in 2020, which the AfD won, a serious political crisis erupted when, with the votes of the CDU, AfD and the Liberals (FDP), the liberal Thomas Kemerich was elected Prime Minister. During a press conference with South African President Cyril Ramafoza, Merkel called it a “bad day for democracy” and called her party’s stance unforgivable. The AfD has appealed to the Constitutional Court, accusing the chancellor of discrimination against her, and today Vice President Doris Koenig stated that “it was not clear that Mrs Merkel did not want to speak as chancellor but as a party politician” and therefore its statement, “which contains negative references to the AfD, is a violation of the right of equal opportunities between the parties.”
