The search for a 3-year-old boy who disappeared from the nanny’s yard ended tragically with a dead body found in the pool.
On Wednesday afternoon, the body of a boy identified by police as Harry K was found in a swimming pool at a Christmas tree farm 650 feet from the nannies in Lowell, Massachusetts.
“I’m not sure how Harry got to the pool, where he was or how long it took him to get to the pool,” said Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
Police said the boy’s parents took him to the babysitter’s house at 7 a.m. Tuesday, and at least one neighbor saw him playing in the backyard at 9:15 p.m.
Shortly after, around 9:30 am, the boy’s babysitter reported him missing. The police immediately began searching for him. Among them were 200 police officers, K9 units, helicopters, drone operators and horseback police.
Lowell police warned the general public about her disappearance by using the Reverse 911 system to contact residents and asking authorities to contact authorities if there was any information about a young child.
“This is clearly any parent’s worst nightmare. This is a child who disappears in a very short time, does a painstaking search for hours, and then recovers,” Ryan said.
His body was found Tuesday at the edge of a pool blurred with divers at a depth of about 5 feet, WCVB reported.
The boy’s body was found before 2 p.m., some 29 hours after his last visit. He was not found long after police defended the decision not to issue an Amber Alert because there was no reason to believe horseplay was involved.
Police said a small child had entered the woods at Rollie’s Tree Farm.
The cause of the child’s death is still unknown.
