The aircraft will be delivered with a warranty of at least 10 years, during the transition period until the acquisition of fifth-generation F-35 aircraft, according to a statement from the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
The Romanian government is set to buy 32 used F-16 fighter jets from Norway, in line with a bill passed Thursday.
The aircraft will be delivered with a warranty of at least 10 years, during the transition period until the acquisition of fifth-generation F-35 aircraft, according to a statement from the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
The estimated cost is € 454 million, including € 354 million in Norway for the two squadrons and € 100 million in the US for logistics and special equipment needed to modernize the aircraft.
These F-16s served the Norwegian air defense for more than 40 years before being replaced by F-35s earlier this year.
Currently, the Romanian Air Force has 17 F-16 fighters purchased from Portugal in 2016, while in 2023 it is expected to withdraw the remaining 20 obsolete MiG-21 LanceRs.
Romania joined NATO in 2004. President Klaus Johannes announced in March that his country would increase its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP from 2% today.
