The British army chief said Russia had “reduced power” because it had already “strategically lost” the war in Ukraine.
Admiral Tony Radakin believes that Vladimir Putin sacrificed a quarter of Russia’s ground forces solely for “small” gains.
He acknowledged that the invading forces could achieve “tactical success” in the coming weeks, but said that the assumption that the war was successful was “nonsense”.
That intervention comes as Russia continues to make slow but steady gains in the Donbus region, while Ukraine is turning to the West for more military support.
However, Admiral Radakin said that Russia has also run out of missiles and advanced troops and will never be able to occupy all of Ukraine.
He estimates the number of Russians wounded and dead is now around 50,000, but Moscow has refused to publicly acknowledge that figure.
“This (war) is a terrible mistake by Russia,” he said during a meeting with soldiers at Edinburgh prison on Wednesday. Russia never dominates Ukraine.
“Russia has already been strategically defeated. NATO is stronger and Finland and Sweden are about to join.
Russia explained that it is currently engaged in tactical battles involving “hard” battles, saying that Putin was forced to refuse to conquer most of Ukraine’s cities.
“Russian cars have fallen apart and are shrinking a few kilometers, two, three or five kilometers every day,” Admiral Radakin said.
And although it will be difficult for Ukraine, it will be a long battle. We support Ukraine, which has shown how brave it really is.
“And Russia is worried about a shortage of people and a shortage of high-tech missiles.”
Why did Russia lose the “strategic” war – despite its advantages?
Admiral Tony Redakin believes:
- Russia runs out of advanced missiles
- It has already lost 25% of its ground capacity.
- Putin was forced to abandon his goal of occupying most of Ukraine’s cities.
- The total number of intruders is 50,000.
- Russia has lost diplomatic and economic power.
He continued: “President Putin used about 25% of his military power to control a small area, killing and wounding 50,000 people.”
The admiral said that Russia has been “strategically defeated” and has lost diplomatic and economic power since the start of the conflict.
However, without additional support from the West, there is growing concern that Ukraine may not have the firearms to prevent Russia from moving forward.
Yesterday, French, German and Italian leaders came to Kieu to discuss assistance to Ukraine.
Earlier this week, Ukraine’s presidential adviser Mihairo Podriak called on allies to help Ukraine achieve “equality of heavy weapons”: he sought heavier artillery, missile systems and vehicles.
Admiral Radakin said that the UK has provided the MLRS missile system and has just supplied 120 armored vehicles.
He added: “We were giving anti-tank weapons. There are other factors that we are giving and will continue.
“But these are the masses offered by the entire international community, which puts it in the request for determination to fight for the Ukrainian army and its territory.

“This is true equality and where is the real strength of Ukraine?”
The admiral added that he was in contact with his Ukrainian responder, General Valerii Zaluzhny, who realized they were in a “tough battle” in the east.
He said: “They are brave people.
But they are also honest people and they say they need help.
He said that Britain continued to support Ukraine and “we are working on this for the long term.”
