A 300-page condemnation report for a scandal of athlete abuse weighs heavily on the British Gymnastics Federation.
According to the Guardian, there are reports from nearly 400 people, with 39 cases being considered so serious that local authorities have been involved for child protection reasons or concerns about ongoing criminal behavior.
The report states that the British Gymnastics Federation received an average of 300 complaints per year between 2015 and 2020 and that it is aware of irregular behavior by 100 coaches and 90 clubs.
However, it has been acknowledged that the British Gymnastics Federation has already made significant reforms since the report was drafted in 2020.
The report, which was delivered to UK Sport and Sport England last week, was forwarded to the British Gymnastics Federation on Monday. Since then the organization has held a series of meetings with coaches, trainers and parents and has already promised to implement its recommendations.
This year the British Gymnastics Federation highlighted the “significant changes” it has made, including the new CEO, Sarah Powell, better grievance redressal systems and a larger integrity team.
The report comes just days after it was revealed that a former national acrobatic gymnast had become the first to win a political case against the British Gymnastics Federation for abuse in the sport. The board acknowledged full responsibility and reached a compromise with Eloise Jotischky, who claimed that between 2016 and 2018 she remained “physically exhausted” after undergoing inappropriate weight management techniques at her local club.
The 19-year-old is one of more than 40 athletes claiming compensation against the British Gymnastics Federation, saying that they were victims of systematic physical and psychological abuse.
A joint statement from UK Sport and Sport England said the full review would be released on Thursday afternoon.
