The largest of the fires that have broken out in the country, intensified by the winds that are constantly changing directions, has burned about 90,000 acres in the Sierra de la Culebra, in the region of Castile-Leon.

Thousands of acres of forest surrendered to the flames and more than 3,000 people were forced to move away from the Pu do Fu amusement park, amid the extreme heat that is hitting Spain.

The biggest of the fires that have broken out in the country, intensified by the winds that are constantly changing directions, has burned about 90,000 acres in the Sierra de la Culebra, on the outskirts of Castile-Leon. About 200 people from this mountainous area, near the border with Portugal, fled their homes due to the fire.

Another fire broke out near Pui du Fu Park, near Toledo, and authorities evacuated the area, removing visitors and workers. “The management of the park has decided to evacuate the space and cancel the evening show, for security reasons,” the statement said.

A total of 2,500 visitors, 700 workers, 200 birds and 55 horses were evacuated. No injuries were reported and no human or animal lives were endangered.

In northeastern Spain, hundreds of firefighters are battling blazing fires in Catalonia. One of them, near Baldomar, in the province of Lerida, burned down about 10,000 acres of forest. In neighboring Aragon, at least 12,000 acres burned near the community of Nonaspe.

Speaking at a conference on World Day for Drought and Desertification, the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez praised the firefighters who “risk their lives on the front lines.”
