by

The rockets were reportedly aimed at the Zlikan base in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh. The first of the rockets fell into the base and the second into its perimeter.

Two rockets were fired at a Turkish base northeast of Mosul, in northeastern Iraq, with no casualties, according to sources close to Iraqi security forces who spoke to German news agency on Friday night.

According to these sources, the rockets targeted the Zlikan base in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh. The first of the rockets fell into the base and the second into its perimeter.

Iraqi forces rushed to the area and blocked roads leading to the base, according to the same sources.

There has been no comment from the Turkish side so far.

Turkey has de facto established dozens of military bases in northern Iraq since 2016. It justifies its military presence by citing the need to counter the actions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rebels, an separatist organization that took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984, which Ankara and its Western allies call “terrorist”.

Earlier in the day, authorities in the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan announced that four PKK “fighters” had been killed and another wounded in Turkish drone strikes in the city of Kalar.

For its part, the Turkish Ministry of Defense said that “six PKK terrorists” were “neutralized” (killed) north of the border.

In mid-April, the Turkish military launched a new operation in Iraq against what it claimed were PKK training bases and camps.

Last month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a possible operation in northern Syria against Kurdish fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara considers the Syrian arm of the PKK.

The YPG is the main component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a faction that has played a key role in US-led anti-Islamic State (IS) coalition operations against the Islamic State (IS).
