She will succeed Mete Knunsen, the Danish diplomat who completed her term in office last month, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced.
Mr. Pochel, born in 1965, has 30 years of experience in the German diplomatic corps and was recently named his country’s ambassador to Kabul.
At least temporarily, Marcus Pochelle will run UNAMA, as its leader, Canadian diplomat Deborah Lyons, recently resigned from this position, which she held since 2020. It is not yet known who or who will succeed her.
